WALTON COUNTY, Ga. — Vipulkumar Patel, 46, was killed Thursday after being struck by an SUV in an active work zone along State Route 81 in Walton County, according to the Georgia State Patrol (GSP).
The fatal crash occurred at approximately 11:58 a.m. just north of Ozora Church Road while road construction activities were underway in the area. Preliminary findings indicate that a 16-year-old driver traveling northbound in an Acura MDX entered the work zone and struck Patel as he was taking measurements in the roadway.
Emergency responders were called to the scene, but Patel died from injuries sustained in the collision. The tragic incident underscores the risks faced by construction workers who perform essential duties in and around active traffic zones.
Authorities said the teenage driver was not injured in the crash, and no other injuries were reported. The Walton County Sheriff’s Office initially responded to the scene and requested that the Georgia State Patrol investigate the fatal collision.
Investigators are continuing to examine the circumstances surrounding the crash, including how the vehicle entered the work zone and whether any contributing factors were involved. As of now, officials have not announced any charges, and no additional information has been released regarding possible causes of the incident.
