COPIAH COUNTY, Miss. — Authorities are investigating a fatal shooting after 39-year-old Benjamin Price was found dead Monday morning in Hazlehurst, according to the Copiah County Sheriff’s Department. The discovery has raised concern in the community as officials work to determine the circumstances surrounding his death.
Deputies were dispatched around 11:40 a.m. to the 1000 block of Johnsons Lane after receiving a call about an unresponsive individual. Upon arrival, they located Price behind a residence, where he had been found by a family member. Sheriff Byron Swilley confirmed that Price had sustained a single gunshot wound to the chest.
Emergency responders assessed the scene, but Price was pronounced dead. Investigators quickly secured the area and began gathering evidence as part of an active inquiry into what led to the shooting. At this stage, authorities have not released information regarding potential suspects or a motive.
Sheriff Swilley stated that Price’s body will be transported to the state crime lab for an autopsy, which is expected to provide more clarity on the cause and manner of death. Until those results are returned, the case will remain classified as a death investigation.
