Makayka Theng remains behind bars in the Alamance County Jail without bond following a crash that resulted in the death of 21-year-old Anastasia Cooper. Authorities say the collision occurred during the early morning hours of June 14 on Spring Garden Street near Eula Street in Greensboro.
According to investigators, Theng was driving a Lexus SUV when she allegedly made a U-turn in front of a moped carrying Cooper and another rider. The resulting crash left both individuals seriously injured. Cooper later died from her injuries on Friday, prompting prosecutors to file additional charges against the driver.
Initially, Theng was charged with driving while impaired and failure to yield resulting in serious injury. However, after Cooper’s death, the case escalated significantly. Authorities added felony death by vehicle, felony serious injury by vehicle, and unsafe tires charges.
Law enforcement officials allege that impairment played a role in the collision, though the full details surrounding the crash continue to be investigated. The upgraded charges reflect the seriousness of the incident and the tragic outcome that followed.
Theng is currently being held without bond as she awaits further court proceedings. A judge determined that she should remain in custody while the criminal case moves forward through the legal system.
The fatal crash has drawn significant attention throughout the Greensboro community, where many continue to mourn the loss of Anastasia Cooper. Meanwhile, investigators are working to ensure all facts surrounding the incident are thoroughly examined.
As the case progresses, prosecutors will seek to establish the circumstances that led to the collision, while Theng remains presumed innocent unless and until proven guilty in court.
