BERTHA, Minn. — Authorities have identified 26-year-old Blake Baumgartner of Hewitt as the victim of a fatal two-vehicle crash that occurred late Thursday night south of Bertha. The tragic incident has left family, friends, and the local community mourning the sudden loss of a young life.
According to the Minnesota State Patrol, the crash happened at approximately 10:49 p.m. on April 16 along Highway 71 near Palomino Road. Preliminary reports indicate that Baumgartner was driving a pickup truck northbound when it collided with a sedan traveling in the same direction. The impact of the crash was severe, and Baumgartner was pronounced dead at the scene.
Officials say it remains unclear whether Baumgartner was wearing a seatbelt at the time of the crash or if the vehicle’s airbags deployed. These details are part of the ongoing investigation as authorities work to determine all contributing factors.
The driver of the sedan, identified as 20-year-old Johnathan Freyholtz, also of Hewitt, sustained injuries in the collision. He was transported to Astera Health for treatment and is reported to have suffered non-life-threatening injuries. Investigators have stated that alcohol is not believed to have been a factor in the crash.
Emergency responders from the Todd County Sheriff’s Office, Bertha Fire Department, and local ambulance services assisted at the scene.
