Rene Vargas, a 32-year-old resident of Carencro, was killed in a tragic hit-and-run crash on Sunday night, while 20-year-old Malachi Thibodeaux of Grand Coteau has been arrested and charged in connection with the incident. The fatal collision occurred on the I-49 Service Road near Turf Lane in Carencro, prompting an ongoing investigation by Louisiana State Police.

According to investigators, the crash happened around 9:15 p.m. on June 14, 2026. Preliminary findings indicate that Vargas was traveling south on an electric scooter along the service road when he was struck from behind by a 2014 Ford Focus that was traveling in the same direction.

Authorities reported that the driver of the Ford allegedly fled the scene after the collision instead of stopping to provide assistance or notify emergency services. First responders arrived shortly afterward, but Vargas suffered fatal injuries and was pronounced dead at the scene.

Louisiana State Police have not yet released additional details regarding the factors that may have contributed to the collision. Investigators continue to examine evidence, interview witnesses, and reconstruct the events leading up to the crash.

The tragic incident has left family members, friends, and members of the Carencro community mourning the loss of Vargas while awaiting further answers from the ongoing investigation. Authorities are encouraging anyone with information related to the crash to come forward as they continue their efforts to determine all the circumstances surrounding the deadly hit-and-run.
