Honoring Calvin L. Holley: Illinois Tollway Worker Killed While Repairing Potholes on I-294 in Des Plaines.

The Illinois Tollway community is mourning the tragic loss of Calvin L. Holley, 52, of Chicago, who was killed while performing roadway maintenance work on the Tri-State Tollway in the early morning hours of Saturday. The heartbreaking incident has left co-workers, family members, and transportation officials grieving the loss of a dedicated employee who was simply doing his job to help keep motorists safe.

According to the Illinois State Police, troopers responded shortly before 4:30 a.m. to the southbound lanes of Interstate 294 near Devon Avenue in Des Plaines after reports that three Illinois Tollway maintenance workers had been struck by a vehicle. The workers were repairing potholes near milepost 41.5 when the incident occurred.

All three workers were transported to nearby hospitals for treatment. Tragically, Holley later succumbed to his injuries. Two of his co-workers were also injured and received medical care. Authorities have not yet released details regarding their conditions.

The Cook County Medical Examiner’s Office identified Holley as the worker who lost his life. Tollway officials said he served as an equipment operator and laborer and had been employed by the Illinois Tollway for approximately two years. During that time, he contributed to maintaining roadways that millions of drivers rely on each year.

Officials confirmed that the driver involved remained at the scene and cooperated with investigators. The crash prompted the temporary closure of all southbound lanes of I-294 at Golf Road, leading to significant traffic delays while authorities processed the scene.
