FOLSOM, La. — Louisiana State Police Troop L is investigating a fatal hit-and-run crash that claimed the life of 24-year-old Rodrigo Ornelas Jr. of Folsom, following a tragic incident that occurred shortly after midnight on April 12, 2026, along LA Highway 40 at Blackwell Cemetery Road in St. Tammany Parish.
According to the preliminary investigation, Ornelas Jr. was riding his bicycle eastbound on LA Highway 40 in a poorly lit area when he was struck by an unknown dark-colored sedan or small SUV, also traveling east. Authorities say the driver fled the scene immediately after the collision, leaving the young cyclist critically injured on the roadway.
Responding troopers found that Ornelas Jr. had sustained severe injuries. He was transported to a nearby hospital for emergency treatment, but despite medical efforts, he later died. Officials confirmed he was not wearing a helmet at the time of the crash, though he was dressed in light-colored clothing. Investigators also noted that his bicycle was equipped with reflectors but lacked active lighting, which may have affected visibility in the dark conditions.
Louisiana State Police have launched an active investigation to identify the suspect vehicle and driver involved in the hit-and-run.
