Unimaginable Loss on I-66: Toddler Succumbs to Injuries After High-Speed Crash in Oakton.

Xiomara Herrera, Alejandro Rodriguez Castillo, and their 2-year-old daughter are being mourned following a devastating high-speed crash in Oakton that has left a community heartbroken. Authorities confirmed that the toddler, who had been hospitalized in critical condition, tragically succumbed to her injuries days after the collision, deepening an already unimaginable loss for all who knew the family.

According to the Fairfax County Police Department, the crash occurred just before 12:30 a.m. on May 17 along Chain Bridge Road over Interstate 66. Investigators say Herrera, 30, was driving a 2020 Mercedes GLA 250 at an extreme speed of 116 miles per hour just seconds before the crash. After exiting the I-66 Express Lanes, she failed to maintain control, drove through an intersection, crossed a raised median, and struck a concrete barrier with devastating force.

Herrera was pronounced dead at the scene, while Castillo, 27, who was seated in the front passenger seat, was transported to a nearby hospital where he later died. Their young daughter, who was unrestrained in the back seat, was critically injured and later passed away despite medical efforts to save her.

An 8-year-old child, identified as the son of a family friend, was also in the vehicle and survived with non-life-threatening injuries. This tragedy serves as a somber reminder of the consequences of reckless driving and the importance of safety measures on the road.
