Authorities in Cartersville are investigating a deadly deputy-involved shooting that occurred on March 17, 2026, following a brief pursuit linked to a drug investigation. The incident resulted in the death of 45-year-old Justin Eric Hardin of Canton, while no law enforcement officers were injured during the exchange.

According to the Georgia Bureau of Investigation, deputies with the Bartow County Sheriff’s Office attempted to stop Hardin in a motel parking lot. Hardin fled the scene, initiating a short pursuit that concluded after deputies executed a PIT maneuver to stop his vehicle. Upon stopping, a female passenger, Angela Green, exited the vehicle and was detained without incident.

Investigators report that Hardin refused to comply with commands and then produced a firearm, firing at deputies. Law enforcement officers returned fire, fatally striking Hardin at the scene. A substantial quantity of suspected methamphetamine was recovered from the vehicle, and Green was subsequently arrested.

The shooting remains under active investigation by the GBI, which is standard procedure in deputy-involved shootings. All findings from the investigation will be submitted to prosecutors for review, including any potential criminal or administrative considerations.
