The Des Plaines community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of 61-year-old Jorge Ramirez-Contreras of Rosemont, who was found unresponsive in the waters of Lake Opeka on Tuesday evening.
According to the Des Plaines Police Department, officers were dispatched to Lake Opeka at approximately 8:14 p.m. on June 10 after receiving reports of a man floating in the water. Before emergency personnel arrived, concerned park patrons rushed into action in a courageous attempt to save his life. Witnesses gathered along the shoreline, and one individual entered the water to bring Ramirez-Contreras safely back to shore.
Des Plaines Fire Department personnel immediately began life-saving efforts upon arrival. Despite their determined attempts to revive him, Jorge Ramirez-Contreras was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Lake Opeka, a popular destination located within the Des Plaines Park District’s 76-acre Lake Park, is often filled with families, walkers, anglers, and visitors enjoying the outdoors.
