PEMBROKE, NC — The Robeson County community is reeling after 51-year-old Howard Dean Jones was found dead inside a camper on Melinda Road early Sunday morning. Deputies with the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office responded at approximately 6:39 a.m. to 1141 Melinda Rd. after a report of two deceased individuals inside the camper. Upon arrival, authorities discovered Jones alongside two other victims, confirming a triple fatality.

Jones, a longtime resident of Lumberton, was known in the area as a dedicated family man and community member. His sudden death has left family, friends, and neighbors in shock and mourning, as they struggle to process the tragic loss of a life that touched many.

All three victims, including Jones, are being transported to the North Carolina Medical Examiner’s Office for autopsies to determine the cause and manner of death. Sheriff Burnis Wilkins emphasized that this incident is unrelated to the recent death of Jame P. Lowery, 51, of Pembroke, whose preliminary findings indicate no homicide.

The investigation into Jones’ death remains active, with support from the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms, and Explosives. Authorities are urging anyone with information regarding the case to contact the Robeson County Sheriff’s Office.
