Carloss “CJ” Sumpter Jr. Killed in Bessemer Shooting: Court Records Reveal Accidental Discharge by Relative.
A tragic night in Bessemer has left a family mourning after 22-year-old Carloss “CJ” Sumpter Jr. was fatally shot during what authorities now describe as a devastating accidental shooting involving a relative. Newly released court records have shed light on the heartbreaking sequence of events that led to his death.
The shooting occurred at approximately 11:18 p.m. Saturday in the 300 block of 30th Street South, where a house party was underway. According to investigators, Sumpter and his cousin were both present at the gathering when tensions escalated after someone else at the party reportedly displayed a firearm.
In response, the suspect—identified as Sumpter’s cousin—allegedly reached for a gun in his waistband. However, as he pulled the weapon out, it discharged unintentionally, striking Carloss “CJ” Sumpter Jr. The sudden gunfire turned what had been a social gathering into a scene of chaos and panic.
First responders arrived to find Sumpter unresponsive outside the home. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced dead at the scene at 11:48 p.m., less than an hour after the shooting occurred.
The details emerging from court records paint a picture of a tragic accident rather than a deliberate act, but the loss remains deeply felt. Loved ones are now left grieving a young life cut short under senseless and heartbreaking circumstances.
Authorities continue to investigate the incident, as questions remain about how the situation escalated and whether charges will be filed.
