The Columbus community is grieving the tragic loss of 44-year-old Alexis Hill, who was fatally shot inside the Dollar General store on Victory Drive on Tuesday. Authorities have identified 33-year-old Jerome Willis as the suspect in the deadly shooting. Willis was later killed in an officer-involved shooting after police located him during an extensive search. The heartbreaking incident has left family members, friends, coworkers, and residents struggling to come to terms with the devastating loss of Hill, whose life was cut short in a senseless act of violence.
According to investigators, Hill was working inside the store when the shooting occurred. Those who knew her have described her as a caring, hardworking, and friendly person who always greeted others with kindness and respect. Her death has sent shockwaves throughout the community, where many are remembering her positive spirit and the impact she made on the lives of others.
Following the fatal shooting, Columbus police officers began searching for Willis. Authorities eventually encountered him on Baker Plaza Drive near the former Muscogee County Elementary School. During that encounter, gunfire was exchanged between Willis and officers.
As a result of the confrontation, one Columbus police officer suffered a superficial gunshot wound, while police K-9 Havoc was also shot and later airlifted to Auburn for treatment. Both are expected to survive and recover from their injuries.
Willis was killed during the officer-involved shooting. The Georgia Bureau of Investigation has assumed responsibility for examining the circumstances surrounding the incident, as is standard procedure.
