A heartbreaking flash flood in Petal has claimed the life of 36-year-old Rachael Floyd of Oak Grove, leaving the community in mourning as details of the tragedy continue to emerge. The incident unfolded Monday afternoon near a Walmart on Byrd Boulevard, where Floyd was inside her white SUV when rapidly rising floodwaters suddenly overwhelmed the area.

Witnesses described a terrifying scene as the water surged with little warning, trapping the vehicle in a powerful current. Bystanders rushed to help, desperately attempting to reach Floyd as she struggled to escape the rising water. Despite their efforts, the force of the flood proved too strong. Authorities said the SUV was eventually swept beneath the roadway, disappearing as the dangerous conditions intensified.

Hours later, Forrest County Coroner Lisa Klem confirmed that Floyd’s body was recovered on the opposite side of Highway 42 near Strahan’s. Officials also reported that no autopsy will be conducted.
