The community of Valdese and the surrounding Catawba County area is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Alex Austin, a 19-year-old whose young life was tragically cut short following a motorcycle crash in Hickory. Family, friends, and loved ones are remembering Alex as a vibrant young man with a bright future, whose passing has left an immeasurable void in the hearts of all who knew him.
According to the Hickory Police Department, the crash occurred at approximately 8:12 p.m. on Friday, June 12, 2026, along US Highway 70 SE near 21st Street Lane SE. Investigators reported that Alex was operating a 2024 Kawasaki EX500 motorcycle eastbound when it collided with the rear of a 2021 Hyundai Kona traveling in the same direction. The impact occurred in the middle lane of the roadway.
Emergency responders quickly arrived at the scene and provided medical assistance. Alex was transported by Catawba County EMS to Catawba Valley Medical Center before being airlifted to Atrium Health Carolinas Medical Center in Charlotte due to the severity of his injuries. Despite the determined efforts of medical professionals, he succumbed to those injuries on Saturday, June 13.
The tragic loss of someone so young has deeply affected the community. As news of Alex’s passing spread, many expressed their sorrow and shared heartfelt condolences with his family. His memory lives on through the countless lives he touched during his 19 years.
