The city of Muscatine, Iowa, is reeling from one of the deadliest and most heartbreaking tragedies in its recent history after a devastating murder-suicide claimed the lives of seven people, including the suspected gunman, Ryan Willis McFarland, 52. According to the Muscatine Police Department, officers responded shortly after 12:12 p.m. on June 1, 2026, to reports of a shooting at a residence in the 210 block of Park Avenue. Upon arrival, officers discovered four victims suffering from gunshot wounds. Tragically, all four were pronounced deceased at the scene.
Investigators quickly identified Ryan Willis McFarland as the suspected shooter. Authorities say he fled before officers arrived and was later located on the Riverfront Trail near the pedestrian bridge, where he was found with a self-inflicted gunshot wound. Despite lifesaving efforts, he was pronounced dead.
As the investigation expanded, police discovered two additional victims at separate locations connected to the case. One victim was found at a residence on Mill Street, while another was located at a nearby business on Grand Avenue. Officials believe all six victims were relatives of McFarland.
Among the victims identified was Lesa McFarland, 51, Ryan McFarland’s wife. Authorities also confirmed that two students and two school district employees were among those killed, deepening the grief felt throughout the Muscatine Community School District.
