The Daytona Beach Shores community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Tammie Joe Baker, 62, who was tragically killed while working inside a beach toll booth at the Dunlawton Avenue beach access ramp on Monday afternoon. Her sudden and devastating death has left family members, friends, coworkers, and community residents grieving a life taken far too soon.
According to the Volusia Sheriff’s Office, the fatal crash occurred shortly before 1 p.m. when a pickup truck slammed into the toll booth where Baker was working. Authorities said the impact was so severe that the structure was crushed and spun around. Sheriff Mike Chitwood described the scene as devastating, noting that the booth was completely destroyed by the force of the collision.
Emergency responders rushed to the scene, but despite their efforts, Baker succumbed to the injuries she sustained in the crash. She was an employee of the county’s parking operations contractor and was carrying out her duties when tragedy struck.
Authorities identified the driver as Deanna Harrell of Ormond Beach. Investigators reported detecting the odor of alcohol inside the vehicle and conducted impairment testing as part of the ongoing investigation. Officials also stated that Harrell allegedly attempted to leave the scene following the collision. She was later taken into custody under Florida’s Baker Act. As of now, no criminal charges have been announced.
