The community of Lawrence is in shock following a harrowing overnight incident that claimed the life of a 70-year-old woman. Authorities have taken her grandson into custody after a disturbing sequence of events led officers to a residence southwest of Clinton Parkway and Crestline Drive. The victim, whose identity is being held pending further family notification, was found unresponsive in her home in the early hours of the morning.
According to a news release from the Lawrence Police Department, the situation began around 2 a.m. when dispatchers received a chilling phone call. During the call, the woman’s grandson, identified as 25-year-old Marcus Cassella, allegedly confessed to strangling his grandmother. Upon arriving at the scene, officers discovered the woman in her bed; despite the quick response of emergency personnel, she was tragically pronounced dead at the scene.
Adding to the complexity of the scene, officers located Cassella’s 24-year-old brother inside the home. He was found unharmed in a separate bedroom with the door shut, seemingly unaware of the violence that had occurred just moments before. He has since been assisted by authorities as they work to notify extended family members of the devastating loss.
Marcus Cassella was apprehended without further incident and booked into the Douglas County Jail on suspicion of first-degree murder. As of this morning, he is being held without bond. The investigation remains active as detectives work to uncover a motive behind this senseless act of domestic violence that has left a family shattered and a neighborhood grieving.
