A Massachusetts man reported missing after a weekend hiking trip in New Hampshire has been found dead, bringing a somber end to a multi-day search effort. Authorities identified the hiker as 61-year-old Kent Wood of the West Roxbury neighborhood in Boston, whose body was discovered Tuesday evening in a remote հատված of the Kinsman Pond Trail in Lincoln.
According to New Hampshire Fish and Game officials, Wood had traveled to the Lafayette Campground on Friday, April 17, intending to spend the weekend camping and hiking in the scenic Franconia Notch area. He began his hike on Saturday morning under favorable conditions, with warm temperatures and clear skies. However, that afternoon marked the last time family or friends heard from him.
Concern grew after two days passed without contact, prompting Wood’s family to notify authorities. A search operation was launched Tuesday morning after officials were alerted to the overdue hiker around 8:45 a.m. Tragically, at approximately 7:41 p.m., search teams located Wood’s body about 5.5 miles from his parked vehicle.
Investigators believe rapidly changing weather conditions played a critical role. While Wood had prepared for mild spring temperatures, the region experienced an unexpected shift, with 3 to 5 inches of snow falling between Sunday and Monday, creating hazardous and wintry conditions in higher elevations.
Officials are using the incident to remind outdoor enthusiasts that mountain environments can remain unpredictable well into spring. Hikers are urged to prepare for winter-like conditions, carry proper gear, and stay informed about weather changes before heading into remote terrain.
