The Bartow community is mourning the heartbreaking loss of Ryon Hartwig, a 44-year-old motorcyclist whose life was tragically cut short in a crash Friday evening in Plant City. Authorities identified the driver involved in the collision as Santiago Ruiz Rangel, 59, of Mulberry, who was arrested and charged with DUI Manslaughter following the fatal incident. As family and friends come to terms with this devastating loss, they are remembering Ryon for the life he lived and the impact he made on those around him.
According to the Florida Highway Patrol, the crash occurred at approximately 6:45 p.m. on June 12 near Clarence Gordon Jr. Road on State Road 60. Investigators said Hartwig was riding his Harley-Davidson motorcycle westbound when a GMC Sierra exited a private driveway and entered his path. The collision was severe, and despite emergency response efforts, Hartwig succumbed to his injuries at the scene.
Those who knew Ryon describe him as a caring, hardworking, and genuine individual whose presence could brighten any room. He was known for his love of motorcycles, his adventurous spirit, and his unwavering dedication to the people he loved. Following the crash, troopers arrested Rangel and transported him to the Hillsborough County Jail. Authorities reported that his blood alcohol concentration measured 0.170, more than twice Florida’s legal limit of 0.08. The investigation remains ongoing.
