Walter Palmer and Three Granddaughters Die in Crete House Fire, Community Mourns Tragic Loss in Early Morning Blaze.
CRETE, Ill. – A devastating fire early Wednesday morning claimed the lives of 71-year-old Walter Palmer and his three granddaughters in Crete, officials confirmed. Crete fire crews responded just before 1 a.m. to a reported fire on the 100-block of Chalet Court. Upon arrival, firefighters discovered a one-story home fully engulfed in flames.
Firefighters from multiple agencies worked to extinguish the blaze while attempting to search the home. Due to hazardous conditions, including a partial roof collapse, crews had to adopt a defensive strategy. The fire was brought under control in about 40 minutes, after which crews entered the home and found four people dead.
The Will County Coroner’s Office confirmed Palmer as one of the deceased. The three others were children, also of Crete, identified as Palmer’s granddaughters. Two of the victims were found in a front bedroom, while Palmer and a teenager were found in a back bedroom. Relatives said Palmer had taken custody of the girls following their mother’s death and was deeply devoted to them.
“He was very invested in his grandchildren. They’d come outside, and he’d watch,” neighbor Elisa Jackson said. “It is a tragic loss for our neighborhood in general. He was such a wonderful neighbor. He’d do anything to help you, shovel the driveway in the snow, and watch over the girls. They had such a beautiful relationship.”
Authorities continue to investigate the cause of the fire, while the community mourns the heartbreaking loss of a devoted grandfather and his three grandchildren, whose lives were cut tragically short.
