Keith Levan Found Unresponsive in SCI Benner Cell as State Police Launch Review.
BELLEFONTE, Pa. — Keith Levan, a 30-year-old registered sex offender, was found dead inside his cell at SCI Bennerover the weekend, officials confirmed, prompting an active investigation into the circumstances surrounding his sudden death.
According to Superintendent Bradley M. Booher, correctional staff discovered Levan unresponsive in his cell on Saturday, April 11. Emergency response protocols were immediately initiated, and prison medical personnel rushed to provide life-saving measures. Despite their efforts, he was pronounced deceased at the facility shortly after.
Authorities stated that Levan had been serving a four-to-ten-year sentence for failing to comply with sexual offender registration requirements following a conviction in Columbia County. Court records indicate his underlying violation stemmed from a failure to update his change of address in 2021, which led to his incarceration.
Levan had previously been transferred from SCI Houtzdale to SCI Benner on February 3 as part of his ongoing state sentence. Officials have not released additional details regarding his medical history or any possible contributing factors leading up to his death.
The Pennsylvania State Police have launched an investigation in accordance with standard procedure for all in-custody deaths. Authorities emphasized that the inquiry is ongoing and that further information will be released once preliminary findings are completed.
The Pennsylvania Department of Corrections stated that it is cooperating fully with investigators while reviewing internal protocols to ensure all required emergency response measures were properly followed during the incident.
Levan’s death marks another case under review within the state correctional system, as officials work to determine exactly what occurred inside the facility cell.
